Tips and tricks to prolong battery life of your mobile gadgets

Li-ion battery of your mobile gadgetsLithium ion batteries should be charged for about 5-6 hours

If you are a heavy user of your high-end mobile phone or laptop, you must have faced lot of problems and inconvenience when the battery goes low or goes off. How you wish the battery lasted much longer than it actually did. After all, what is the use of the mobile phone or laptop if you cannot use it just because the battery charge is low or the charge has drained out completely? So, how do you make your mobile phone or laptop battery last longer to avoid being inconvenienced every time you are on the move? Here are a few simple tips to make your battery go that extra mile.

Charge a new battery fully: It is important to ensure that a new battery is fully charged before using it. In fact, you need to charge it for 5-6 hours to initialize it, even if the battery appears to be fully charged. More importantly, you should never discharge the battery fully while using the mobile phone or laptop since it reduces the life-span of your battery. Always charge the battery when the battery meter shows at least one bar remaining.
Cool is good: A cool battery is a good battery. If possible, you may keep the battery in a fridge to keep it cool. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight or other sources of heat. Do not leave your laptop and mobile phone inside a heated car and also avoid keeping your mobile phone in your pocket for very long. The heated car and your body heat will raise the temperature of the battery.
Use the correct charger: Your battery charger should be the one rated and specified for your battery. Do not use a charger which causes the battery to heat up excessively.
Store it properly: If you are not going to use your mobile phone or laptop for a while, remove the battery and store it in a fridge (but not in the freezer) in an air-tight container. To use it again, remove the battery from the fridge and keep it aside for an hour to normalize its temperature. Thereafter, recharge it before using it again.
Clean battery contacts: Battery terminals accumulate dirt or metallic corrosion over time and this reduces energy efficiency of the battery. Dirt may be cleaned with cotton swab and rubbing isopropyl alcohol, while metallic corrosion may be removed with solvents such as acetone and nail polish remover. However, since these solvents dissolve plastic, care must be taken to avoid damaging battery housing.
Quick tips ans tricks
High-end features such as Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi, infrared etc. drain out battery quickly. Switch off these features and turn them on only when you want to use them.
3G/dual mode consumes more power than GSM, so switch over to the GSM mode. Use the 3G mode only when needed.
Do not use animated pictures or videos in the background of your phone screen as these drain out the battery faster.
Using ‘vibrate’ function drains out battery quickly, so turn off the ‘vibrate’ mode and use the ring tone at a low volume to conserve battery.
Avoid using the camera and internet unnecessarily, camera flash especially uses up battery fast.
If your phone has a ‘Battery Save’ option, use it to save energy.
If your phone checks out your email every 15 minutes or half-an-hour, it uses up battery every time it does so. Change the setting so that it does not check your email automatically.
Things To Watch Out For
Never store a battery with a very low charge over a long period, battery monitor will draw a small current which’ll causes the battery to deep discharge thereby causing damage to the battery.
Do not use a cheap knockoff charger as it may heat the battery excessively.
Always look out for the date of manufacture of the lithium ion batteries. Older the battery, greater the oxidation and lesser the life of the battery.
Buy your battery only from authorized resellers of the company.
